Aborigines and their Place In Politics :: social issues

Natives and their Place In Politics For quite a bit of their history, Australia⠡â ¦s significant gatherings didn't see a need to have  ¡Ã‚ ¥Aboriginal affairs⠡â ¦ approaches, yet this changed during the 1960s and 1970s as the Aboriginal intrigue came to possess a progressively conspicuous position. The strategies of ongoing significant governments, those being the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the Coalition, comprising of the Liberal Party and National Party, have changed definitely since the Federation of Australia. The methodologies from the beginning of time of these significant gatherings will be talked about quickly so as to increase a comprehension of the establishment of each party⠡â ¦s convictions and stages with respect to Aborigines. The principle policy centered issues confronting Aborigines in the public arena today will be recognized, and in this way the primary ideological groups approach and strategies will be recognized comparable to each issue. At long last, ongoing strategies and enactment presented by the primary ideological groups will be presented and talked about. From 1937, the methodology of all legislatures was one of  ¡Ã¢ ¥assimilation⠡â ¦, whereby Aborigines would submit to influence in white manners before having their spot in the general Australian people group. Nonetheless, in opportunity this arrangement went under escalating assault on all sides, with pundits asserting the approach precluded these people from securing their Aboriginal culture, and implemented the idea of the predominance of the white culture. For a period,  ¡Ã¢ ¥integration⠡â ¦ turned into an approach of the Commonwealth, however it was difficult to recognize the differentiation among  ¡Ã¢ ¥assimilation⠡â ¦ and  ¡Ã¢ ¥integration⠡â ¦. As mentalities changed, State governments started to revise a considerable lot of the laws that denied Aborigines equity with whites. In 1967, all gatherings kept up the proposed Constitut ional revision. In spite of the fact that perspectives had started to change, little had been done to infringe such adjusted mentalities in unmistakable government strategies. The Labor Party made the best pitch for these interests, and at its 1971 Federal Conference, Gough Whitlam drove the gathering into imagining the most point by point Aboriginal undertakings strategy yet received up until this period, by a significant gathering. This required the foundation of a full Aboriginal issues division. Whitlam ensured that a Labor government would not flounder to supersede any State laws  ¡Ã¢ ¥which oppressed Aborigines, or which directed Aborigines, or which diminished the open doors for Aborigines to behave as they wished⠡â ¦. Moving aside  ¡Ã¢ ¥assimilation⠡â ¦ and  ¡Ã¢ ¥integration⠡â ¦, Labor received  ¡Ã¢ ¥self-determination⠡â ¦, a strategy which talked about Aborigines eventually having the option to  ¡Ã¢ ¥decide the pace and nature of their future devel opment⠡â ¦, where they would  ¡Ã¢ ¥take a genuine and successful obligation regarding their own affairs⠡â ¦.

Protective Gear Equals Safety In The Nhl Essays - Protective Gear

Defensive Gear Equals Safety In The Nhl Defensive GEAR EQUALS SAFETY IN THE NHL The NHL should compel their players to wear defensive apparatus. Three reasons why defensive apparatus ought to be worn are: one, it would forestall physical wounds; two, the players would set a genuine model for the people in the future; three, it would detract from the contrary parts of the game. Defensive apparatus enables a to some degree fierce game to stay as spotless as could reasonably be expected. Wearing defensive apparatus would forestall physical wounds in hockey. There were numerous hockey players who have buckled down the entirety of their lives to become proficient hockey geniuses and when they at long last got to the NHL, they become harmed and had to watch the game as opposed to playing in it. A case of this is Brett Lindros. At sixteen years old, the New York Islanders drafted Brett in the first round of the passage draft. He played his first NHL game against the Buffalo Sabers when he was eighteen years of age. After one year, on February ninth, his entire life came slamming down on him. His deep rooted dream to win a Stanley Cup had reached a conclusion. He was hit with a roaring bodycheck into the sheets and was thumped oblivious. Before long it was found that Brett had a background marked by blackouts that dated back to when he was sixteen years of age. The impact constrained him to resign at nineteen years old and spend an incredible remainder contemplating what was presently the way that he would need to stop so as to live. What really happened was, the point at which he was hit against the sheets, his head hit the glass and that effect constrained him to crumple and tumble to the ice. He was quickly taken to the crisis room and there the specialists said that they couldn't inspect the seriousness of the injury unexpectedly early. The seriousness of a blackout relies carefully upon how much power is applied to the head and whether it is a head-on or a looking blow.1 The next week, specialists disclosed to him that he needed to quit playing hockey in light of the fact that the blackout was serious and there was no chance that he could recover his wellbeing and play hockey. This frightful injury could have been maintained a strategic distance from if Brett was wearing an affirmed protective cap. The protective cap that he was wearing at the hour of the injury had no froth within. That froth makes a difference retain the effect of a hit to the head. In the event that he had been wearing one, there would have been an enormous possibility that he could have left the ice with just a mellow physical issue rather than a lifelong completion one. Another model is Brian Berard. His entire profession reached a conclusion on March the eleventh when he was playing against the Ottawa Senators. Marian Hossa was taking a slapshot and Berard tumbled to the ice to obstruct the shot. At the point when the puck was shot, the finish of Hossa's stick struck Berard in his eye. The blow caused a 20-millimeter cut over the eyeball, disconnected the retina, cut off the focal point, and caused other problems.2 Brian Berard is just twenty-two years of age and is compelled to complete his vocation as a result of his wellbeing. All of which could have been maintained a strategic distance from in the event that he had been wearing a visor on his protective cap. On the off chance that he had been wearing a visor, Hossa 's stick would have recently ricocheted off the plastic and Berard would at present have obstructed the shot. It's tragic to think about all the great individuals who have been harmed while playing this exceptionally physical game of hockey. It is considerably progressively tragic to consider those whose wounds that could have been kept away from in the event that they had recently had the correct security. Brett's more seasoned sibling Eric Lindros characterizes this best. There is no player more significant to his group than Eric is to the Philadelphia Flyers. Be that as it may, on December fourteenth, his profession stopped when he was hit with a difficult elbow to his head. He was playing against the Florida Panthers when Alex Hicks elbowed him in his face. He got a ten- 1 Levy Allan, Sports Injury Handbook (Toronto: John Wiley and

What Does Music Mean Me - 1869 Words

What does music mean to me? When I was little I was interested in music so I decided, in 6th grade, to start playing an instrument, that instrument was the Trumpet. At first I started out playing the Flute, but I later realized that I was not good at it. When I went to go try out instruments I picked the Fluet and they told me because of my lips and braces it would be hard for me to get the appropriate air flow out, so I decided to play the Trumpet. I picked the Trumpet because my father payed it when he was in high school, and because it only had three valves. My first Trumpet was rusty and old looking and the third valve would always get stuck when I played my music. I got over that and continued to play anyways because I had an interest in it, and because I loved music of every type. I love to sing as well. Playing the trumpet was pretty hard, but I met some cool people and expanded my playing ability. When I entered middle school at Patrick Henry, I got a brand new Yamaha Trumpet that was shiny and new, and all the valves worked. The band room in the middle school was really cool. It had previously been painted by older classmen, but unfortunately it soon disappeared because the teacher wanted to paint it white so we weren t distracted. If felt pretty cool, for some reason it gave off a calm and creative atmosphere. I was decently skilled at the Trumpet, but I wasn t the best. Elements of Depreciation Computation free essay sample

Depreciation accounting may be defined as a systematic procedure for allocating the cost of a long-lived asset over its useful life. The determination of the depreciation expense of a period depends on three basic elements. These are: †¢Depreciation Base. The cost to be allocated over the period of use is known as the depreciation base. We will write a custom essay sample on Elements of Depreciation Computation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This consists of the initial purchase cost of the asset minus any salvage value expected at the time of retirement plus the anticipated costs of removing the asset when it is retired. The cost of using an asset during its life is reduced by any salvage value recoverable at the end of the period and is increased by costs of removal. These elements of the depreciation base are often extremely difficult to measure. When it is anticipated that a substantial residual value will be recovered, an estimate of this value should be included in the determination of the depreciation base. †¢Useful Life. The useful life of a fixed asset is a function not only of the physical wear and exhaustion to which the asset is subjected, but also of technological change and innovation. Thus, a particular machine might be expected to last for ten years on the basis of physical endurance alone, but the development of new and better machines might reduce our expectation of its economic usefulness to four years. Both obsolescence and physical endurance must be considered in estimating useful life. In general, the useful life to be used for depreciation purposes will be the shorter of the lives estimated on the two bases. An asset that is physically exhausted can be expected to be replaced, even though it is not yet obsolete. On the other hand, an asset that is obsolete should also be replaced even though it is not physically worn out. †¢Procedures for Computing Depreciation. The objective of depreciation accounting is to assign to expense systematically the cost of a long-lived asset over the asset’s useful life. There are, however, many procedures for accomplishing this task. Although there is numerous depreciation procedures used in practice, our discussion will be limited to procedures that are most widely used. †¢Straight-Line Depreciation. When using the straight-line procedure for computing depreciation, the annual depreciation charge is obtained by dividing the depreciation base by the number of years of useful life forecasted. The main advantages of the straight-line procedure are its simplicity and the fact that revenues of successive years are charged with equal amounts of depreciation. The main disadvantage is that, given the assumptions of constant revenue and constant maintenance costs, the return on investment of the asset (income divided by the investment) will increase as the asset becomes older and the net book value decreases. The basic simplicity of the straight-line procedure has caused it to be the most widely used depreciation procedure for accounting purposes. Pen Names and The Famous Writers Who Use Them - The Writers For Hire

PEN NAMES AND THE FAMOUS WRITERS WHO USE THEM If you have ever read a book and found yourself thinking that the style and way of writing seemed very familiar, it is possible that the book you are reading was actually written by your favorite author —only under a pen name. A pen name, also known as a nom de plume or a pseudonym, is an assumed name used by an author, in place of their own name. Some authors write exclusively under their pen name, while others write under both their actual name and their pen name (or multiple pen names, in some cases). But, why do authors use pen names? And how do they come up with the pen names they use? While the answer for that varies from author to author, we have come up with a list of 8 famous authors who have used pen names, and the reasons behind their decision to forgo their real names on their books. Mark Twain (real name Samuel Clemens): It is a well-known fact that Mark Twain’s real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. It is said that Clemens got the name â€Å"Mark Twain† from his former job as a riverboat captain. The term, â€Å"Mark Twain†, is a river term that means â€Å"two fathoms,† or 12 feet. The sounding of â€Å"Mark Twain† on a riverboat meant that it was safe to navigate the water. What is not so well known is the fact that Clemens also wrote under the names Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass, Sergeant Fathom, and W. Epaminondas Adrastus Blab. It is said that Samuel Clemens chose to write under pen names as a way to have literary freedom, and protect his family from repercussions due to the content and opinions of the characters in his books. Dr. Seuss (real name Theodor Seuss Geisel): Theodor Seuss Geisel is famous worldwide for his children’s books, penned under the name â€Å"Dr. Seuss.† Geisel first started using this pen name in college, after he was caught drinking by the Dean of the school, stripped of his position as editor of the Dartmouth college’s humor magazine, â€Å"Jack-o-Lantern,† and banned from writing for the magazine. In order to trick the administration and continue writing for the magazine, Geisel adopted the name Dr. Theophrastus Seuss, which he later shortened to Dr. Seuss. Geisel was not actually a doctor of any sort, having dropped out of the PhD program at Oxford. The â€Å"Dr.† in his pen name was in honor of his father, who had hoped that Geisel would someday get his PhD. The â€Å"Seuss† came from Geisel’s middle name, which was also his mother’s maiden name. While not nearly as famous as his â€Å"Dr. Seuss† pen name, Geisel also famously wrote under the names Theo LeSieg (Geisel spelled backwards) and Rosetta Stone. George Orwell (real name Eric Arthur Blair): When author Eric Arthur Blair was ready to publish his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, he was concerned that his family would be embarrassed by the stories of their time in poverty. In order to protect them, he decided to adopt a pen name. He chose the name George Orwell to reflect his deep love of England. George is the patron saint of England, and Orwell was the name of a river where he loved to go sailing. Lemony Snicket (real name Daniel Handler): It is likely that most people cannot identify any books written by Daniel Handler. However, one would be hard-pressed to find someone who has never heard of Lemony Snicket and his popular childrens series’ A Series of Unfortunate Events and All the Wrong Questions. It is said that Handler first adopted the pen name of Lemony Snicket when he was doing research for his first novel, Basic Eight. He needed to contact various right-wing organizations, but did not want them to have his real name. Thus, Lemony Snicket was born. Stan Lee (real name Stanley Martin Lieber): Debatably one of the most famous comic book writers in the world, Lieber originally made the decision to write under the name Stan Lee because he hoped to one day graduate to writing more serious literary work, and planned to save his real name for that. Once it became apparent that he was destined to be known for his comic books, Lieber made the decision to legally change his name to Stan Lee. Richard Bachman (real name Stephen King): When King first started his writing career, it was a common belief in the publishing world that an author could only successfully release one book per year. In order to bypass this belief, King created the pseudonym â€Å"Richard Bachman,† so that he could release multiple books per year. King ended up publishing seven novels under the name of Bachman, before the connection between his pen name and his real identity were discovered. While King claims that he created his pen name in order to get away with releasing more books per year, it is said that he also wanted to see if â€Å"lightening could strike twice.† He wondered if his writing talent alone could launch his Richard Bachman personality into as much fame as he had achieved under his own name. Interestingly, though, the books he released under the name Richard Bachman did not gain success until it was publicly known that the books were King’s. JK Rowling and Robert Galbraith (real name Joanne Rowling): Now famous worldwide for her Harry Potter series, Rowling’s publishers were at first unsure if her target audience of pre-teen boys would accept stories about wizards that were written by a woman. For that reason, they encouraged her to use initials on the books instead of her first name. Having no middle name, Rowling adopted the â€Å"K† from her grandmother’s name, Kathleen, and became known as J.K. Rowling. What may surprise some, though, is that Rowling has been writing crime novels under yet another pen name: Robert Galbraith. Rowling has said that she made the decision to write her crime novels under another pseudonym, so that she could freely write without having the pressure from being the author of the wildly successful Harry Potter books. She liked the appeal of being able to create something completely different, and wanted her crime novels to stand (or fall) on their own merits. Mary Westmacott (real name Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie): Known as the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie created 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections during her impressive writing career. However, what is unknown to many is the fact that she also wrote six romance novels under a pen name, Mary Westmacott, which she managed to keep secret for 20 years. It is said that Christie adopted her pen name, so that she could more easily switch genres from mystery and crime to romance.

book report on Thomas Jefferson essays

book report on Thomas Jefferson essays Thomas Jefferson by Norman Risjord is a biography of the third president of the United States that takes Thomas Jefferson from his youth through his later years in the early 19th century. The purpose of this book is to give a political and social overview of the Thomas Jefferson's life and career. It was written for both the student of American history and the casual reader interested in the genesis of the United States government, seen through the eyes of one of its founding fathers. The value of this book is that it shows that Jefferson was not a saint, yet he was one of the most intelligent presidents that the country has ever had. Risjord has given the book great value because he has framed Jefferson among his peers. Consequently, the book truly comes to life, and the reader is able to learn about Jefferson as well as his contemporaries James Madison, John Marshall, and John Adams. The scope of the book is all-inclusive. Risjord begins with Jefferson's birth on April 13, 1743 on his father's plantation, Shadwell, in Goochland County on the western edge. The narrative continues on to show Jefferson graduating from William and Mary College, then entering politics in Virginians House of Burgesses in 1769. Jefferson married Martha Skelton on New Year's Day, 1772. With the Virginia legislature from 1776 to 1779, Jefferson formed the groundwork for abolition of entail and primogeniture, for the establishment of religious freedom, and not for the public school system. Jefferson was of course the author of the Declaration of Independence, and because he had set this document in motion, he waited out the Revolutionary War to see if the colonies would win. If they had lost, Jefferson would have been hanged for treason against the King of England. He served as the minister to France from 1785 to 1789. At this time there was growing opposition to Alexander Hamilton and his p ...

Responding online dissciocuion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Responding online dissciocuion - Essay Example The instructions on how to prepare Miso Soup were ineffective. The author should have provided an image illustrating how to wrap the tofu block in two layers and how to lay it on as required. The author of the post is wrong in generalizing that all adults can get by without images. The author should understand that people have different levels of understanding. Assuming that the intended message will be conveyed adequately without visual aids is an unwarranted assumption. It would require considerable effort to teach an individual with significant knowledge of the language how to tie a bow-tie without the direction of visual images (Laskowski 1). The terminologies to use when explaining how to perform a body building exercise will be difficult to choose. The use of a video guide simplifies the task. In conclusion, the writer of the post succeeds to show the relevance of visual aids in instructions. The careless inclusion of images is pointless, but skillful use of the same is of significant importance (Laskowski

History Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

History - Term Paper Example The imperialistic world has been replaced by the ideals of sovereignty and self determination, where a nation-state is more powerful than anything else. The international political scenario has transformed into a nation-states system where every state has a defined territory and any breach in the territory of one`s state is considered as illegal and unlawful. The governance of the empires has been replaced by concepts like Mutually Assured Destruction and the governance of democratic states as all states are under the oath of UN. As for the economy, earlier the colonizers were the sole resource owners of the world, and to fulfill their industrial appetite, resources were being transferred to the hegemonic states. As for now, no state has the right to the resource of any other state. The barter system has been exchanged by monetary reserves which define the financial state of any nation. The cultural variables have also been re-defined to a great extent. The white man burden implied t hat the colonial white masters were the superior race and they had the burden of civilizing the inferiors they were ruling. Nowadays, the ethical concerns are of huge importance and every global citizen irrespective of their race, caste or origin is equal to any other citizen of the world. Thus, it is only sane to say that the world of 2015 is definitely in every sense better than the world of 1500`s. To prove the point that the world of 2015 is better than the world of 1500`s in many aspects, the era needs to be discussed in detail to understand the ideals followed during that time as opposed to those found in the recent times. 1500`s was the era when the trade routes were recently discovered by the European travelers like Vasco da Gama and Christian Columbus. These trade routes opened way towards Asia, Africa and even America where colonies were explored and due to the naval superiority and higher development owned by Europeans, they claimed to right to the resources of the world. This was the time when the Europeans believed that their white skin color owed much to the higher intellect and better culture due to which it was their responsibility to teach the non-whites and train them by ruling them. Thus, they started forming colonies where they were the sole land owner as well as the human resource owners where the locals of the area were being treated like aliens and inferiors. This way the colonizers started attaining right over all resources and these lands started becoming rich. The world system was being governed by the rule of â€Å"might is right† (Currie 2001). Since the Europeans were the first to explore the far off lands and had the naval superiority to rule the colonies, they claimed right over the resources of the world. Thus, economy and politics was interlinked during that era as the colonizers attained resources like silk, gold, silver, coal, cotton, spices etc from the colonies and developed their economies accordingly. Moreover, the y developed the strategy of â€Å"divide and rule†, and by virtue of this rule they destroyed the cultures of the locals. Thus, the principles of self rule and ethics were absent from the mindsets of the colonial masters. Religion was thougwh the supreme power by virtue of which the pope controlled the power of the state, and inflicted political power by virtue of

Douglas Stuart and Gordon Essay Example for Free

Douglas Stuart and Gordon Essay People may believe that they do not need any hermeneutical training, but a general reading of the book How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Fee and Stuart is essential for Christians who have any inclination towards scripture. The guidelines and rules outlined in the book are very good and some of them are very well developed from the point of view of interpreting and understanding scripture. For the Bible student and the inquiry seekers, the book is an excellent tool for teaching. Douglas Stuart and Gordon Fee have displayed their competencies in making the interpretation of the principles of the Bible available to present day readers. While Gordon Fee is an Old Testament scholar, Douglas Stuart is a student of the New Testament and they have covered in the book matters relating to translations, the legendry genres of poetry, parable, narratives and epistles and the meanings conveyed in the writings that were presented to their original audiences. The authors have shown how the right interpretations require different ways of exegesis as per the literary texts being studied in terms of Wisdom, Apocalypse, law and Wisdom. When considering New Testament Epistles, it is realized upon reading the book that the authors have given excellent advices in saying that the book should be treated as letters. This implies that individuals must read the book several times just as they would read letters from their close ones and then try to understand the meaning conveyed in them. It is very important to understand that the text aims at revealing the concept that the book was written to address a specific audience in order to make them understand the intricacies of Christianity. It is not possible for a reader to be extra subjective in trying to apply the different passages from the scripture to his or her own life particularly when a specific passage does not connote the meaning as believed by the reader. The book has lot of positive components and attributes that make it an excellent piece of reading. It effectively describes the complication and difficulty faced in translation and provides general principles and rules of effective interpretation. It endorses the consideration of the cultural and historical perspective and observes the writing styles and genres used in the books, and also suggests being cautious against any kind of misinterpretations. The authors have presented an easy to understand style which brings forth the art of biblical interpretations within the reach of the normal human being in a way that make the study of the Bible very rewarding and interesting. The book provides recommendation for the use of bible translations, concordances and dictionaries as facilitation to the studies. The back cover has clearly explained about the book, In clear, simple language, it helps you accurately understand the different parts of the Bible—their meaning for ancient audiences and their implications for you today—so you can uncover the inexhaustible worth that is in God’s Word. The authors have exhibited certain negative attributes especially in regard to some specific viewpoints which every reader may not agree with. For example, the material available in Acts and the Epistles was more relevant during the days when the texts were written and is considered a much lesser positive aspect in the viewpoint of King James and New King James Bible. The present day international version of the Bible is known to be much influenced by feminism while the translation versions of the Bible, especially the English Standard Version, are not much influenced by feminism. This is considered as being more sought after as the Dynamic Equivalence way of translation. Some scholars have come to believe that all hermeneutic theories have not been adequately dealt with by the authors. Since one of the authors is said to be an associate of the Assemblies of God Church, he has made some critics to point that the hermeneutics have been presented in his style. There have been several allegations of the flow of content being difficult while the style of writing has not been up to the mark. How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth guides the reader in a way that he or she can handle the Scripture in a better way, and teaches how misinterpretations can be avoided by using the context properly. The entire book emphasizes the importance of holistic reading of passages as per the over all substance of Scripture. Quirky doctrines and bad exegesis are the result of instances when passage and biblical statements are taken out from the theological, historical or cultural contexts and focused on aspects that are away from the whole of the revelation. In this context the introduction in the books has aptly explained that, The aim of good interpretation is not uniqueness; one is not trying to discover what no one else has ever seen before. Interpretation that aims at, or thrives on, uniqueness can usually be attributed to pride (an attempt to ‘out clever’ the rest of the world), a false understanding of spirituality (wherein the Bible is full of deeply buried truths waiting to be mined by the spiritually sensitive person with special insight), or vested interests (the need to support a theological bias, especially dealing with texts that seem to go against that bias). It is realized that the authors have made powerful points when one tries to understand the historic tests of the Old and New Testaments. They firstly make a case in favour of reading these books in order to see the activities of God in the matters pertaining to His Church and Israel. Hence these books are better understood if they are divided into separate sections that should be read as a successive account of deliverance history. Additionally the authors have warned that the passages should not be decontextualized and allegorized since such actions become tempting while reading historical narratives which do not appear to have much spiritual and theological importance. Significant points have been made by the authors in enhancing the awareness of the gospels. It is initially affirmed that some knowledge of the historical texts is important and crucial and that one is at a disadvantage if he or she is not conversant with Mediterranean culture of the 1st century. Secondly, it helps to read accounts of similar gospels and understand the minor differences which can enhance the understanding in regard to the audiences that the gospels intend to address and the kind of message that the authors are aiming to convey in those instances. It is established in the entire book that, as a rule, one must think and read in paragraph form to make the best and most meaningful use of the books. The treatment of the legal books of Hebrews is very impressive. The authors make a strong point that the given laws were specified for Israel in order to make them get benefits by understanding and applying them to the Israeli people. This point is considered valid by the authors but they also point out that there needs to be a precise way of teaching that the law did not emphasize upon. Moreover, the New Testament is no longer binding on the people today and is not considered by the authors as a strong argument. The laws that condemned rape, incest, homosexuality and bestiality were not specifically stated by Jesus, but they are believed to be true and applicable today also. The book is concluded in dealing with revelation, wisdom literature and psalms. However there is nothing new or revolutionary in these narrations which include strong and sound advice in regard to some negligible points of contention. Although the book cannot be considered exhaustive as a guide it is undoubtedly the best in enabling the understanding and reading of the Scripture. In essence, the book has aptly demonstrated how the Bible should be read theologically through the eyes of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ instead of the overtly idealistic and literalistic methods. Bible reading is revealed as being not only informative but also resulting in the positive transformation of human beings. Computers Mimic The Human Mind :: essays research papers

The mind-body problem has captivated the minds of philosophers for centuries. The problem is how the body and mind can interact with each other if they are separate and distinct. One solution to the problem is to replace any mental term with a more accurate physical description. Eliminative Materialists take this idea to the extreme by stating that everything that is believed to be mental will someday be explained in terms of the physical world. One way that people try to prove Eliminative Materialism to be true is through technology. Certainly if we are able to create computers and software that mimic the human mind, then Eliminative Materialism is a sound solution to the mind-body problem. In order to examine if computers actually do mimic the human mind then we must first look at the capabilities of the human mind. If one looks closely at the capabilities of the human mind and compares them to the most recent technological advances, then it would be obvious that computers and sof tware are beginning to mimic even the most advanced mental states. In the future, computers will be able to do anything the human mind is capable of thus proving Eliminative Materialism to be a sound solution to the mind-body problem. Most of the day the human mind is taking in information, analyzing it, storing it accordingly, and recalling past knowledge to solve problems logically. This is similar to the life of any computer. Humans gain information through the senses. Computers gain similar information through a video camera, a microphone, a touch pad or screen, and it is even possible for computers to analyze scent and chemicals. Humans also gain information through books, other people, and even computers, all of which computers can access through software, interfacing, and modems. For the past year speech recognition software products have become mainstream(Lyons,176). All of the ways that humans gain information are mimicked by computers. Humans then proceed to analyze and store the information accordingly. This is a computer's main function in today's society. Humans then take all of this information and solve problems logically. This is where things get complex. There are expert systems that can solve com plex problems that humans train their whole lives for. In 1997, IBM's Deep Blue defeated the world champion in a game of chess(Karlgaard, p43). Expert systems design buildings, configure airplanes, and diagnose breathing problems. NASA's Deep Space One probe left with software that lets the probe diagnose problems and fix itself(Lyons).

Analysis of the Rocking Horse Winner Essay

A literary analysis of ‘The Rocking Horse Winner’ by D H Lawrence cannot fail to mention the strong metaphor of the toy rocking horse itself. Other strong metaphors include the race horses and the idea of gambling in general.. The image of a boy rocking himself to illness and death on a toy horse suggests a powerful and upsetting metaphor for a child’s burning ambition and distress, and to understand the metaphor we must look more closely at the story itself. In â€Å"The Rocking-Horse Winner,† short story by D H Lawrence, a child gets the feeling that circumstances in his family are deteriorating financially and feels utterly powerless to improve the situation. He sees the bitterness of his mother’s discontent and tries to improve her lot, although she seems to pay him little regard. All her attention seems concentrated on a husband who, despite his efforts, can never provide enough for her insatiable appetite for material things. Horses in general, gambling on their races and in particular, the rocking horse itself become metaphors for the child’s ambition, and the driven quality of his determination to succeed – at all costs. The child, Paul, decides that there will never be means to support his family unless he assumes some sort of control himself. Paul decides to resolve the financial crisis through luck, chance, fate and gambling on horses. He thinks that he can divine winning horses in races by riding his own toy rocking horse. The horse metaphors suggest the themes of ambition in life turning to a blinkered disregard for the costs and consequences in a narrow given area, a drive bordering on obsession. Either by luck or by judgement, Paul actually starts to win money and hopes it will make his mother happy. What he doesn’t realise is that she is the sort of person whose appetite will simply grow and whose discontent is of her own making. The need for money just balloons out of control and family members start to put pressure on him. The strain of duty, loyalty, responsibility, guilt, repression and denial of affection and reward becomes so unbearable that he rides his rocking horse so madly that he gets sick and collapses as his chosen horse is about to win a famous race. D H Lawrence’s own relationship with his mother – one of love, but also of control – is relevant to the story too. In his drive to succeed, Paul echoes the need of the young Lawrence to please his own mother – and of course, highlights another form of ambition, that of her hopes and dreams for a gifted young son in avoiding the pit life and aiming for something arguably higher and more academic. The horse metaphor it seems, has deep roots in Lawrence’s own childhood.

Ideological Differences On Renewable Energy - 1084 Words

Ideological Differences on Renewable Energy Ever wonder what the world would be if there was no more energy, no more electricity in our household and no more gas for our car? Energy is a necessary resource that is used every day in American households and vehicles. Unfortunately, majority of the energy that is currently used comes from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are un-renewable energy, which means that one day that it would eventually disappear. Unlike fossil fuels, there is an alternative way to get energy, from renewable sources. I will be presenting the Democrat’s and the Republican’s views on renewable energy use and also be comparing the similarities and differences. I will also explain my own perspective on renewable energy use†¦show more content†¦By giving support to renewable energy projects, it help increase the number of renewable energy jobs and helps decrease the use of fossil fuels. They have made improvements on its current renewable energy use but, according to Usnews, the Democrats have a plan for 2035. â€Å"As part of an ‘all-of-the-above’ energy policy, generating 80 percent of the nation s electricity from clean energy sources by 2035† (Usnews). If the majority of the nation’s electricity comes from renewable energy, there would be less of a need to use the depleting fossil fuel supply. The Democrats have increased the use of renewable energy by legislation and will continue making renewable energy the new standard instead of fossil fuel. Even though Democrats believe renewable energy is the way of the future, there are others who do not necessarily think so. Unlike the Democratic Party view on renewable energy, the Republican Party believe that fossil fuels should be the main focus instead of renewable energy. According to the GOP, Republican Party, website, the Republicans actually encourages renewable energy, but they think â€Å"the taxpayers should not serve as venture capitalists for risky endeavors† (GOP) The Republicans think it is too big of a risk to invest into the renewable energy. The reasons why renewable energy is riskier is evident on the Whitehouse website. â€Å"Today, solar power is significantly more expensive than electricity from fossil fuels in most regions of the
